She was born on July 22, , in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. She was the second of six children in the family of Estelle Caldwell and Reverend Robert Capers Fletcher, who was an Episcopal priest from Arab, Alabama. Both of her parents were deaf and worked with hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing individuals.
